Learning the Ropes

All in all, I had a great time at the Extreme Mustang Makeover. | Photo by Charles Brooks

As I mentioned in my first blog, I came to work for Horse&Rider after working for AQHA. Though it was still in the horse industry, I didn’t work in the editorial department.

Making the switch from marketing to editorial has been quite the learning process for me.

A perfect example was my trip to the Extreme Mustang Makeover event in Fort Collins, Colorado, June 10-11.

Going into the event, I knew that I would be working with regular H&R photographer Charlie Brooks, and I knew we had many types of photos to take.

What I didn’t expect is that I would be acting as the “editorial link” between Charlie and the magazine. Charlie looked at me once and said, “What kind of shots were you wanting for the possible article?”

Umm?let me think about that for a bit.

Fortunately, once I did the interview, I had a clear idea of how to direct Charlie for the shoot.

Some things you just have to learn by doing!

While I was at the event, Charlie also took plenty of candids of me. Take a look at this slide show to see what a fun time I had playing with the mustangs!
