HOW’D YOU DO? (Answers below.)

1. T is correct. A situation that seems like it may be rewarding negative behavior but is actually a form of mitigating bad experiences is feeding a treat before and after a vet or farrier appointment. Offering a treat before and after a stressful procedure can help a horse get through the event and associate it with something positive rather than scary.

2. C is correct. Regular dental exams should be performed every six to 12 months, starting at a young age. As your horse ages, he will need extra watchfulness as other diseases could begin to develop.

3. D is correct. Cold therapy or “icing” is a common post-workout leg care therapy. Icing can help prevent injuries, treat new injuries, and manage old ones.Icing your horse after hard workouts or upon sight of a new injury will help him recover quicker.

4. T is correct. Movement increases blood flow, which encourages hoof growth. Offering your horse as much turnout time as possible—this is not only great for his hooves, but his mind as well—will allow him to move naturally to increase circulation.
