Roping Box Work: Opening Chute

Brad Barkemeyer shares a drill he uses to help desensitize his roping horses to the sound of the chute.

Adding the sound of the opening chute to your horse’s training is the next step in Brad’s roping horse training process. He explains that you don’t want your horse to react to the sound of the opening chute every time, but they should be conditioned to follow the cow. To practice this, start without cattle and have your horse stand in the box. When the gate opens, put your left hand forward and have your horse lope away from the box, then halt. Practice keeping your horse straight and on the left lead.
