The Ultimate Ranch Sorting Show Checklist

Make packing for your next Cinch RSNC ranch sorting event easy with this comprehensive checklist for both horse and rider.

Are you heading to a Cinch RSNC ranch sorting anytime soon? Everyone knows how stressful it can be to get ready for a show—and packing the trailer is often the most daunting part of it all. Set yourself up for success and ensure you’ve got everything you need for a fun, action-packed weekend. Use this checklist to make packing smooth and stress-free.

For the Horse

Paperwork

All horses must have proof of a negative Coggins test and, if you’re crossing state lines, you’ll also need a valid health certificate.

  • Proof of negative Coggins
  • Health certificate
  • Brand certificate, depending on your state laws
  • No breed registration requirements unless competing for an APHA Chrome Cash Incentive

Tack

It may seem obvious, but there’s nothing worse than arriving and realizing your favorite cinch is still at home. Don’t forget:

  • Saddle pad
  • Saddle
  • Cinch
  • Bridle
  • Bits

Additional tack to consider bringing:

  • Boots or polos
  • Back cinch
  • Breast collar
  • Extra headstalls

Feed and Supplements

Stick to your regular feeding program while on the road. Changing your horse’s routine can add unnecessary stress. Pack enough for your entire trip—and a little extra, just in case.

  • Hay
  • Hay nets
  • Grain
  • Supplements
  • Water and grain buckets

“I really like Total Equine from Total Feeds because on the ranch, my horse is on pasture nearly every day, and I want a feed that can aid the nutrition he’s already getting. Total Equine also gives him the extra boost he needs in Montana’s winter months.” — GR Farthing, Editorial Director

In the Stall

Set your horse up to be comfortable and rested. Here’s what to bring:

  • Shavings
  • Muck fork and shovel
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Hose
  • Trash bags
  • Saddle racks
  • Double-ended snaps
  • Extension cords
  • Locks
  • Fans
  • Baling twine (because it fixes everything)

Grooming and Bathing Supplies

Keep your horse looking and feeling their best.

  • Body brushes
  • Curry comb
  • Hoof pick
  • Mane and tail brush
  • Fly spray
  • Shampoo
  • Sweat scraper
  • Sponges
  • Poultice and liniment

Extras

You’ll be glad you brought these:

  • Blankets
  • Lunge line and whip

For the Rider

Memberships

You can sign up online at rsnc.us or register at the show.

Show Clothing

Cinch RSNC-sanctioned events require western attire in the show pen:

  • Western hat (optional)
  • Collared, long-sleeve western shirt (no polos)
  • Western boots

“The only jeans and shirts I wear are Cinch. Their styles are not only comfortable in the sorting pen, but also deliver a sharp, professional western look that represents our sport well.” — Logan Wolfe, Cinch RSNC Event Director

Additional Gear

  • Spurs
  • Belt
  • Rain gear
  • Helmet
  • First-aid kit
  • Sunscreen
  • Snacks

Make sure you review the Cinch RSNC rulebook so you’re fully prepared.
